The Nitrogen Tire Scam

Why pay extra for something that is already ~78% of the air you breathe?

Is It Worth It?

The Simple Version

For most drivers, nitrogen provides limited benefits over normal air. If you want it, it shouldn’t be a big add-on fee — and you can still top off with normal air later.

The Science: The atmosphere of Earth is composed of approximately 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, with small amounts of other gases.

When a dealer fills your tires with "Pure Nitrogen," they use equipment to increase the nitrogen concentration compared to normal air.

The Claims vs. Reality:

  • Claim: "It keeps tire pressure more stable."
    Nitrogen can slow pressure loss a bit, but you still need to check tire pressure regularly. The benefit is often modest in everyday driving.
  • Claim: "It prevents wheel corrosion."
    Corrosion prevention is not a compelling reason for most modern vehicles. Focus on keeping tires properly inflated instead.

The Real Cost: Many tire shops can fill nitrogen for free or low cost. The point is you shouldn't pay a large dealer add-on fee for it.

How to decline it:

"I’m declining the nitrogen add-on. Please remove the charge from the buyer’s order."
